Sequencing the ocean, one handful of mud at at time.

Research in the Bik Lab focuses on the the biodiversityevolution, and ecology of microbes in marine sediments, with an emphasis on eukaryotic taxa and deep-sea ecosystems. Our work aims to link taxonomy and high-throughput sequencing methods, using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches (marker gene amplicons, metagenomics, and targeted genome sequencing).

Our lab stands at the interface between biology and computer science, using biological questions and evolutionary hypotheses to drive the development and refinement of –Omic approaches focused on marine microbes. Software development work focuses on the reproducible, open source bioinformatics workflows and novel, exploratory data visualization tools.
